Research and curatorial residency
Founded in 1971, Vidéographe is an artist-run centre dedicated to the research and dissemination of moving image practices. Our aim is to promote and inform audiences about current and archival works in genres ranging from experimental video art and installation, digital art, animation, documentary, essay, fiction, and dance video.
With more than 2,000 works produced by over 800 artists, activists, and engaged filmmakers since the 1970s, Vidéographe’s catalogue represents one of the most important collections of Canadian video art.
This research and curatorial residency aims to offer diverse perspectives on this collection, and to foster research in the field of moving images. We invite artists, researchers and curators to explore a theme or an area of research, using our catalogue as a point of departure. Participants may take a thematic, formal, or historical approach, and might focus on the work of one or more artists.
As part of this residency, we are expecting that participant will develop a video program and write a critical essay. The video program will be presented as part of our 2019-20 program and will be available online for free for a period of three months on Vithèque.com along with the essay.
A selection committee will evaluate the proposals on the basis of their relevance vis-à-vis our collection, their complementarity to our programming, and their rigor. Student projects will not be accepted.
Vidéographe recognizes the richness of cultural, sexual, linguistic, and identity-based diversity in Quebec. We therefore encourage those from minority, marginalized, or traditionally under-represented groups to submit proposals.
Successful applicants will receive a flat fee of $2,000. We foresee the duration of each residency being a period of one to three months. Vidéographe will assume transport and accommodation costs for a period of one month for participants who do not reside in Montréal. The work may also be carried out online, via Vithèque. We will assist successful candidates in researching the catalogue.
For Anglophone candidates, please note that part of our collection is in French without subtitles, so you should be comfortable with French to submit your application.
